Why You Should Frame Your Art

Part 1 of 3 from All About Framing Prints Series

Framing art is like adding the right accessory to your favorite outfit. It’s like adding the just the right amount of salt to your meal or finishing off your makeup with the perfect touch of lip gloss.

The key: don’t let the {accessory, structure, frame, etc} steal the show!

That’s basically how my mentor explained framing to me. Frames should never be the hero of the display. But they should be the hero’s biggest supporter! They should give all attention to her while at the same time supporting and protecting her.

The trick to framing is figuring out how to emphasize what is inside the frame while at the same time, supporting what's outside the frame.

Ask yourself, what needs to happen on the edges so the art stands strong inside while at the same time transition the art into its physical space in the room? The purpose of the frame is to bring both worlds together in harmony.

Personally, I tend to lean towards simple, modern, and clean framing displays. I want my art to pull the viewer into its world. I want the way it’s displayed to support the concept, style, composition, and movement of the art.

In the next article of this framing series, I’m going to give you 8 keys for framing your art. Then following that article, I’ll share great framing resources to get you started... and most importantly, FINISHED framing!

You made a beautiful remark for me when you said that frames should be the hero’s biggest supporter, and they must be able to help an artwork gain attention. My daughter has a lot of needlework that I am planning to display in our living room so more people can appreciate them. I will be sure to do your tips in order to ensure that they would be framed properly and to find a reliable framing service. https://www.hallofframe.com.au/needlework-framing
